Coaching a puppy to come when it is called is a urgent, and most likely life saving, part of any successful canine training programme. All correctly trained dogs must learn how to reply right away to the owner’s voice, and the earlier this lesson is learned the better. The benefits of training a dog up to come when called are plain. This is especially vital when you’re out with your dog, particularly in an area with masses of traffic. Coming when called is also a urgent talent for each working dog. Whether the dog’s job is herding sheep, defending cattle, or sniffing out bombs and drugs at the airfield, the working dog must be under total control at all points, whether on leash or off. After the 1st obedience lessons ,eg heeling, stopping on command, sitting on command, and so on.
Have been learned, it is time to start incorporating the come when called lessons into the daily sessions. One note about dog obedience training it’s all too simple for sessions to become leaden and routine for both handler and dog.
It’s important, to always incorporate fun things and play into each training program. Incorporating one or two minutes of play time before the lesson starts can perform miracles for the disposition of dog and human alike. The command to remain and the command to come when called are commonly mixed in obedience coaching lessons, and they do go naturally together. Commence with the dog on a loose leash, ask the dog to sit and then slowly back away. After you can successfully reach the end of the leash on a regular basis, try dropping the leash altogether. Naturally you will need to do that in a managed environment like a fenced in yard. After the dog has mastered the stay command, it’s time to add the come when called command. Take up the leash again, and with the dog on the end of the leash, say come or come here. It is usually useful to use a lure when teaching this behaviour. The attraction offers an apparent item for the dog to concentrate on. Teaching the dog to come to the lure is a good most important step in coaching the dog to come when called. Repeat this process many times till the dog will habitually stay and then come when called. After the dog has mastered coming when called while attached to the leash, slowly start introducing the idea when the leash is removed. It’s therefore important to test the dog with diversions of your own. If you’ve a neighbor, ideally one with a dog of his very own, try having him come over with the dog. Have him, and the dog, stand just outside of the fenced in area and repeat the come when called exercise with your dog off leash. If he starts to become distracted by the other dog, put the leash back on and repeat the method.
